Mike Hudack

Hi. I'm Mike Hudack and this is my Tumblr. I'm a high school dropout, the CEO of blip.tv and a former warblogger. Also check out the blip.tv blog.
No generation has ever had as much of what it needs to change the world so early. In the long-run, however, whether we live up to that promise will be largely based on how we define success in our personal lives, and how that translates to our professional endeavors. If we decide in five years that money and comfort is the primary objective, we’ll compromise left and right and quickly learn to the next group to pick up where we left off. If, instead, we define success to include not only money but impact and engagement, it will change the entire structure of our economy.

Is this a real ad?  I think it’s pretty awesome!  I’m a big fan of lunges and have been trying to get my butt bigger and rounder for the past few years.  I like that Nike is embracing muscular women.  Skinny girls freak me out.

This is marketing.

I’m acutely aware that this image will be seen by children, who will undoubtedly find it distressing. We have consulted with a number of child psychologists about its potential impact … In the end, I felt that the image is a window into the reality of what is happening — and what can happen — in a war that affects and involves all of us. I would rather confront readers with the Taliban’s treatment of women than ignore it. I would rather people know that reality as they make up their minds about what the U.S. and its allies should do in Afghanistan.

When I look at demos of the stuff HTML5 can do, I have the same reaction as the first time I saw this little guy actually wave to me from inside the HotJava browser.

Boom!

A Cautionary Tale About Foursquare & Privacy

I’ve been thinking a lot about Foursquare recently and wondering why I don’t check-in much anymore. I’m not sure why.

Mom, don’t read this post.

I work in online marketing and it’s no secret that I actively blog, tweet and check in on Foursquare. It’s not just my profession - it’s fun. Social media is largely responsible for some of my closest friendships. I’ve never felt unsafe participating and generally…

This is a weird cautionary tale indeed, and if anyone is concerned about the same thing happening to them, Foursquare lets you disable the option to display your name and avatar on the main page for the venue you’ve just checked into. Go to your settings and un-check “Show my name in the ‘Who’s here’ list in the application and in my friends’ check-ins sent to twitter.”  Done.

Usually there are refreshing, non-alarmist solutions to these things.  And when there aren’t, there should be.

Do you think Foursquare would sell this as an art print? I think it should be called “The Mayor of Sadness.”

Marketing is the act of trying to figure out what motivates people – and it’s embedded in our DNA. Rather than being an afterthought, it should be a driving factor behind our companies, our visions, and our products. If we aren’t mapping our products to how people work and think, we won’t achieve anything.
Anthony Volodkin is Fascinated: I believe in WikiLeaks.

WikiLeaks is hands down the most interesting, ambitious, inspiring and intense project I’ve seen on the web in years.

It reminds me of when I first ran the original Napster. At that moment, something (what it was specifically became clear with time) about media instantly felt different….
