Facebook Events: You’re Doing It Wrong

Fact: When we are uncertain, the actions of other people greatly influence our own actions, this is known as social proof.

Observation: The culture of Facebook is to post the reasons you can’t attend an event on that event’s wall.

Concern: We’re undermining event-turnout by unintentionally triggering social proof against attending.

RSVPs suffice if you can’t make it,

PLEASE STOP POSTING YOUR EXCUSES ON THE WALL.

I disagree. All the wall posts are doing is saying it’s OK to decline the invitation. But it was always OK to decline the invitation. There are some extreme circumstances where it would matter, like if there was a lot of social pressure to accept so you felt uncomfortable about declining, but that’s probably rare if the invitation is delivered via Facebook.

I actually agree with Aaron.  People are social animals.  If it appears that a lot of people are declining the invitation you will be more likely to decline.
