I too am really shocked that this is allowed within 200 feet (or more?!) of a planned Presidential appearance. I was under the impression that Secret Service Agents were EXTREMELY diligent about keeping any potential threat like this far, far away. Or have I just seen too many movies wherein this is true?

It doesn’t need to be as dramatic as all that. I’m reasonably sure that multiple Secret Service snipers had a bead on him through the entire event. I would guess that if he attempted to draw his weapon while the president was around he would be dead before it left the holster.
