Once a startup is successful, and you ask the founders what made it successful, they will usually cite all kinds of things that had nothing to do with it. People are terrible at understanding causation. But in almost every case, the cause was actually product/market fit.

Product and market fit are prerequisites. But these are not the reasons why start-ups are successful. They’re simply a base requirement for success. Success is harder than that.

I agree with both, but mostly I agree with Marc. Product/market fit is necessary and a great product fitting into a large market is rare.
A lot of startups attribute their success to “loving our customers” or “having a great culture”. Important stuff, but product/market fit is much more important.
