I keep going back to this graphic I created about increases in debt and what party controlled Congress at the time. The President is not nearly as responsible for debt as Congress is, since Congress has to pass legislation that increases debt. The president gets too much blame and too much praise for what happens in our country. He has ultimate veto power, but Congress is responsible mostly for coming up with the solutions and creating the problems.
Let’s make no mistake, so called “conservative” republicans are responsible for most of our debt.
When conservative republicans are in power they ran up increases in our national debt like drunken sailors, as the graphic illustrates, and yes democrats, especially the ones currently in office, are responsible too, but not nearly to the same degree.
Congressional over-spending during years when democrats controlled both houses of Congress averaged 0.4% of outlays, and averaged 0.6% when democrats controlled both houses of Congress and the white house. During years when republicans controlled both houses of Congress, overspending averaged 2.3% of outlays, and 4.6% when republicans controlled both houses of Congress and the White House.
When someone tells you they’re a conservative republican they’re most likely a fiscal liberal and a social conservative.
